After much consideration, we have made the decision to shut down (at least temporarily) the registration and reporting side of Leaf Exchange. As of February 24, 2012 we will no longer be taking new registrations, and for existing customers we will return your RECs to you and no longer production report on your account. As we have written about in previous blogs, the 12/15/2011 CPUC ruling destroyed the value of California RECs. It simply does not make financial sense for solar system owners to sell RECs at the current market price of $1.50/REC. Leaf Exchange has always assumed the cost of processing registrations and submitting production reports to WREGIS. We have reached a point where we cannot continue to justify this ongoing expense, with no real end in sight.

We have contacted our Installer Partners and Registered Customers directly regarding the options they have for their account. TheLeafExchange.com website will continue to exist in an information only format, and we will post updates on any breaking news. The possibility does still exist that a legislative bill in the CA State Legislature would reverse the 12/15/11 CPUC decision, and give meaningful value to RECs. We are continuing to fight the fight; here is a draft letter that we are circulating to the Governor’s Office and through the State Legislature, lobbying for a reversal. If CA RECs do have meaningful value down the road and the need for our business resurfaces, we would certainly expect to get back in the game.

We are very proud of what we accomplished and how we went about our business. We became the leading source for simple and objective news and education on California Renewable Energy Credits. We had over 11,000 unique visits to our website since we launched in the summer of 2010. We became the largest 3rd party aggregator in the state, measured by the number of systems registered into WREGIS. We formally partnered with over 25 installers, including some of the most reputable firms in the state. We want to sincerely thank all of our partners, customers and supporters for your belief in us.
